5 tips for travelling seniors

Retirement is often an ideal time to travel the world. You've worked hard your entire life - now it's time to enjoy yourself! Travelling retirees can have very fulfilling holidays in Australia, but sometimes, travelling as a senior demands that a few extra precautions are taken.

Research local health care facilities and insurance

Even if you are in great health, it's a good idea to read up on the health care facilities in the area in which you'll be staying. On a related note, the Australian government offers reciprocal health care for seniors from some countries. Check to see whether or not you'll be covered in the event of an emergency.

Schedule a pre-trip check-up

Seniors should receive a clean bill of health before embarking on a trip. Book an appointment with your doctor, and be sure to ask whether or not you're safe to travel. If you suffer from heart disease or chronic illness, this will be an especially important consideration.

Ask about your medication options

If you take medication regularly and are staying in Australia for an extended period of time, you may need to ask your doctor how you can get your medication while you're on holiday

Get necessary immunisations

Seniors are a high-risk group for influenza, so you may wish to get a flu shot before leaving on your trip. Airplane cabins are notoriously germy, so this is an especially good idea if you plan to fly.

Figure out your luggage situation

If you will be going on holiday for more than a few days, you may have heavy luggage to tote around. If you foresee this being an issue, consider shipping your bag ahead of you. Many airlines offer VIP service that can deliver your luggage right to your doorstep. If you think your luggage might be too heavy for you to carry, this may be a good investment.
