Mercure is a reputable hotel chain. I enjoyed all my stays with Mercure elsewhere, but the family stay at the Duisburg City location was an abject disappointment. Apparently subsisting under the management of an outsourced Eastern European company, the hotel suffers from communication issues, clueless staff unfamiliar with the area, and an abysmal internet connection that would make a dial-up modem seem cutting-edge. Essential apps like YouTube and Play Store are blocked. Amenities? Don't expect beyond barest necessities. Tea? A kettle? Ha! The fixtures are shoddy remnants of better days, barely clinging to functionality. The only saving grace is the location. As for the front desk personnel, incompetence seems to be a prerequisite for the job. My prearranged early check-in, with all payments settled, was met with blank stares. After finally locating my reservation (including the early/late options), the staff repeatedly attempted to charge me again. This farce repeated itself upon checkout. To add insult to injury, my keycard was deactivated, and housekeeping seemed hellbent on reminding me to leave the room despite clear reminders about prepaid late check out. Summary: dreadful management. The location alone prevents it from a complete failure. Final score: 3/10.

Pool was broken and that was the main reason for coming to your hotel. It reopened the next morning but no one told us this so the kids were doubly disappointed when they realized while we were checking out. Breakfast was ok but could have had better coffee and a few more options.
