At 27 C outside, the room was at least as hot or even hotter! A pathetic 10 cm was the maximum the (only one!) window could open. The hot towel rail in the bathroom could not be switched off and added even more heath! Absolutely not what a "privelege" room should have been like!

My wife chose the hotel as it was in the right place for exploring Kent and South Sussex. We found the room spacious and comfortable. Good quality free Wi-FI, large flat screen HD TV. We only had breakfast in the hotel, and that was self service and excellent.
Dear bike_red19 Many thanks for taking the time out to post your fantastic 5* review. I am very pleased you had a lovely and comfortable stay. We recently had the Wi-Fi upgraded in all of our hotels and had new flat screen TV's installed across the estate which has made a big difference. We hope to see you back at the hotel soon and we very much look forward to welcoming you back. Kind regards Nathan Ruthven
The dining room is shabby and many of the chairs have stains and marks. Breakfast was poor, with cold plates, watery mushrooms, half-cooked bacon and no scrambled egg. There was one helpful waitress who provided vegetarian sausages. I noticed that, in the main corridor, some mud remained on the carpet, untouched, throughout our stay.
Dear 303geoffrey Many thanks for taking the time out to post your review. I take all feedback very seriously and I will use your comments to work the relevant head of departments to address your concerns with the team. I am sorry that we did meet your expectation on this visit and I do hope you will give us another opportunity in the future to redeem your faith in the usual service and standard we provide. Kind regards Nathan Ruthven
Stayed here twice. First room was a studio - I thought the decor was a bit OTT but the room was clean, quiet, warm and I slept well. Stayed again for three nights later in the week. My room was A LOT nicer, quite traditional and maybe a bit dated but again warm, clean, big and felt really homely. On Friday night I slept fine. However, on Saturday night a wedding was being hosted at the hotel. The 'bass' of the music was so loud in my room (I think 242) and went on until midnight. Not ideal when you have to be up at 6am. However, I appreciate this was a Saturday night and I thought the midnight music turn off was fair enough. However, on Sunday night a party was being hosted and the same happened again! I was feeling a bit more irritable this time (another 6am wake up) and also whilst I travel for business - I do pay for the hotel out of my own pocket to get a better nights sleep or else I have a long commute home.... I have stayed in plenty of hotels that host events such as weddings before and have never had any issues with hearing the bass of music in my room. At least not to this extent. I can only assume that the sound proofing is terrible and left me feeling really disappointed with my stay. Was a shame as I had planned to stay here again - but I guess I might as well drive home..... Just want to add however that the two girls who served me on reception were lovely! The staff makes the place.
Dear Poppygirl92 Many thanks for taking the time out to post your review, Thank you for choosing to stay with us and we would very much like to be your preferred choice of hotel in the area. I am pleased you found the hotel to feel homely, this is important when you stay away a lot. Please accept my sincere apologies for the disruption with the music, it is not common to have an event on the Sunday and I am sorry this spoilt your stay. On your next visit we can certainly allocate you a quitter room. Thank you for recognising my reception team, they are a great little team and I will be sure to share your comments with them as I know they appreciate to hear it. I do hope we can welcome you back again soon. Kind regards Nathan Ruthven General Manager
Check-in and check-out were efficient. Room decoration and furnishings were in traditional style, not contemporary. Room size and comfort were good. Easy to control heating. Quiet room, undisturbed sleep. Room needed an additional table lamp or standard lamp to bring the lighting up to adequate. Bathroom extractor system very weak, as though almost non existent. (In a windowless bathroom with WC it is absolutely essential the artificial ventilation is effective and works correctly). We went to the restaurant at 9pm for dinner, only to be told the restaurant closed at 9pm. That's unreasonably early, given this was on Sunday 3 January, after the New Year holiday period. Breakfast was good. Traditional English, but being a French chain we were initially pleased to see baguettes and croissants available. Sadly, the baguettes and croissants were seriously below the standard of those in France, from where we had just come. However, Mercure cannot be blamed for this, as British flour used is far inferior in taste to French flour. (Stick to France for decent baguettes, but fried bacon is better in England!). Excellent welcome and service encountered at breakfast by restaurant staff, who conveyed a very positive impression, with enthusiasm and a desire to please. This came across effortlessly, implying a positive attitude within the breakfast staff. Lovely to encounter this!
