Kingfisher Bay Resort is a fantastic place to go for a bit of R&R, or for a bit of adventure. I'd highly recommend the day-long Beauty Spots tour. Martin was our driver and he was an exceptional guide, explaining all the history of the island, the geology, the people, the wildlife; and he did all of this while skilfully manoeuvring an insane 400 hp 4WD bus through extremely narrow sandy tracks. It was surreal in parts. The trip included visiting Lake McKenzie (crystal clear waters and white sand), the wreck of the Maheno, Eurong (the resort on the eastern side of the island), a sand blow, cliffs of coloured sand, a wild dingo, a pod of excited whales, and an exciting 80 km/h + journey down the beach. This is an absolute must for anyone visiting the island. It is also an absolute must to go to the Sand Bar and indulge in late afternoon cocktails, while watching the sun set over Hervey Bay. The cocktails are very moreish and reasonably priced. As for the food, we ate at the Maheno Restaurant, and didn't quite get around to going to Sea Belle (largely due to the cocktails at the Sand Bar). The Maheno Restaurant was great, and our waiter Simon was a particularly friendly and nice guy. I'd certainly recommend Kingfisher Bay Resort to anyone looking to get away to a beautiful island. Apparently there is a pretty long rainy season there though, so be careful when you book.
Thanks for the fantastic five star review and recommendation fergsnz! We love seeing our New Zealand neighbours out and about discovering Fraser Island and it sounds like you took every opportunity to do just that while you were with us. Like anywhere, of course we get rain on the island but there is no particular “wet season”, with weather reflective of that of mainland Hervey Bay. Either way, sunshine or rain, we have you covered with tours running regardless and plenty of daily activities available at Kingfisher Bay Resort. On behalf of Martin, Simon and all the team, we very much look forward to welcoming you back again soon and wish you all the best for the rest of your Aussie adventures while you are here!
It is definitely in need of upgrades in the rooms especially the tiles and bathrooms. Service in the restaurants was slow even when we were the only people there. Food was very overpriced for what was very average pub meals. Was very disappointing to see the slip in standard, I stayed here 3 years ago and was thoroughly impressed with the standard.
Dear jjbarr87. Thank you for posting a review following your most recent stay - we really enjoy seeing return guests and appreciate your loyalty. Please accept our sincere apologies that your time with us on this occasion has failed to impress. We value candid feedback such as yours as it allows us to make improvements to our products and services and would like to assure you we are listening to recent guest comments and working hard to make positive changes in our restaurant. On behalf of all the team, we do hope you visit again soon, giving us the opportunity to redeem ourselves.
Hi all, I would like to share our expirience staying at this resort. After i have made booking i have read reviews..more of negative, i was then concerned with my booking.. when we arived rooms and staff were really good. We have booked 2 rooms with breakfast. Good clean facilities, close to everything, staff was very helpfull and assisted with ferry bookings etc. If you are planning trip to fraser and to expirience its beauty i would recommend this resort. the only thing is missing is stowe or microwave. ..we had out mini portable stove that we were using for cooking sometimes..apart from that Everything was perfect. Will go there again
Dear Roman S Thank you for your review sharing your kind comments about your recent stay and our staff. We are very pleased you enjoyed your time at Kingfisher Bay Resort – Fraser Island and look forward to seeing you again soon.
The overall stay was relaxing, pleasant and comfortable. The resort is value for money. We had not been back for 15 years and so it was nice to see it still there and the surrounds had been respected. Staff were obliging. Food in Seabelles was exceptional. Food on other occasions was satisfying but nothing out of the ordinary with a little more effort it could have been easily improved. Some mornings the weetbix were covered with glad wrap, sometimes they weren't. Small issue, but soggy weetbix? The humidity should be catered for at all times for all food. Rooms are three star and still have the beach "musty" smell, so we kept the air con going all the time which alleviated this issue. The shower curtain was insufficient to keep the floor dry which was a nuisance. The shower head sometimes flew off the cradle and sprayed water everywhere. If you are staying on the lower floor, you need to hope that the people above you don't decide to "thump" around at midnight as the floors are not sound proof. Every time we tried to dial "9" we could not get a response. The phone was very unreliable - room 119. The music in the common areas was not appropriate for various times of the day, especially "rock" music at breakfast. The surroundings are very pleasant and relaxing and maybe the music could be adapted to the various times of the day. We did note that some of the local fishermen were cheeky enough to take advantage of the pool facilities after fishing on the jetty. We know this because we were fishing on the jetty when they moored for the day (and night). We never had any issues, but in my mind then raised the issue of security around the facilities? Would recommend the resort, but don't book thinking it is a 5 star property.
Dear mickandannie Thank you for taking the time to post and for your constructive criticism regarding your weetbix and the restaurant music and the locals swimming - we'll certainly be passing this on to the team. It's also great to see that our staff were obliging and that you enjoyed your meal in Seabelle. You don't mention whether you let us know about your room as the team would've been more than happy to attend to that for you. We also want to assure you we never market ourselves as a luxury or 5-star property and would welcome any feedback you have re this. Best Regards, Kevin Bailie, General Manager.
We went to Fraser from the Sunshine Coast so we drove to the Kingfisher Bay mainland office and left our car there and went over on the ferry as foot passengers. Highly recommend this option. Would also highly recommend the 4WD full day tour and the light plane flight that takes off from and lands on the beach near the coloured sands. Four wheel drives are also available for hire from Kingfisher Bay. And the sunsets are amazing !!!!
Hi Gary D Great to read that you had a fantastic stay with us on Fraser Island. We also recommend the Beauty Spots tour as a great way to see the sites (if you're not confident driving); to get your bearings if you're planning on hiring a car; or to relax and let others handle the tides, traffic and terrain. Thanks for your terrific review.
Once I got over the fact that it's not recommended to swim in the ocean anywhere due to a variety of creatures, the lovely pool area came in very handy ;) The lakes are amazing but do require 4WD vehicle to get around due to the large size of the island and dingoes. Non the less it was very peaceful and grounding.... the interactive ranger walks and talks were very interesting!
Dear niikees, Thank you for your response on your stay. We are glad to hear you enjoyed your time with us, especially our Ranger walks and talks. It is always motivating to share this feedback with our teams and we will do so at our next Ranger team meeting. We hope to see you on the Island again in the not too distant future.
In Jan I visited the island with my two children and some friends. We spent four fantastic days at Kingfisher Resort and enjoyed every minute. We were lucky to have fantastic weather and spent a lot of time either in the pool or lazing around it. The children particularly enjoyed the Beauty Spots tour of the island and the Bush Tucker walk. We also enjoyed some great meals down at the Sand Bar and the cheese platter at the Jetty Hut was pretty good too. More staff are probably needed to keep on top of clearing tables, emptying the towel hampers around the pool and staffing the Maheno restaurant and bar. This would help make a better impression on visitors, especially those who have travelled great distances and spent a lot of money getting to this amazing part of the world. While waiting for a drink at the Maheno bar a worker announced that there would be no more cocktails for another hour. No reason was given. Lots of frustrated people who had to settle for something else. I found most of the staff very friendly and helpful especially Jamie, who promptly arrived to fix the A/C in my room, Feronica at the spa and Rebecca in the restaurant. Overall, it was a great four days and we are looking forward to another visit soon.
We go to Fraser Island 3-4 times a year, but this was our first time staying on the Western side. Access from River Heads was easy although make sure you book ahead in peak times. No 4WDing needed to drive to the resort. We stayed in a hotel room which overlooked a lagoon - very peaceful. Odd room numbers overlook the lagoons/beach. Lower room numbers are very close to main buildings and pool - highly recommend this end of the hotel rooms. My husband and I both woke up with sore backs - bed felt comfy but obviously wasn't suited to us :( We loved the extended pool hours 6am -10pm so kids enjoyed the early morning as well as evening swims in the main pool. We didn't eat at the resort so can't comment on that. We brought our own food. There's a bar fridge in the hotel room. There are also villas for families with full kitchens, but for our one night stay the hotel room with 1 queen, 1 single, and air beds for our other kids was sufficient. The resort is powered by electricity from the mainland. A lightning strike took out the power on the mainland for an extended period (over 15 hours), but the resort only stayed out for about 20 minutes before switching on their diesel generators. We were still able to use all electricity including air conditioners during our stay so I couldn't fault them on their provision of power as some others have commented on. We only stayed one night, then headed to the Eastern Side. We loved how close it was to Lake McKenzie, only about half hour drive. Would recommend a one nighter here at the beginning or end of your trip for a bit of luxury, but it's too far to travel each day to our favourite spots on Fraser.
Dear TheAussieBeachBums Great to see repeat guests visiting our island paradise and we thank you for your comprehensive review and your kind comments. We also thank you for your patience during the power outage (which stretched from Bundaberg to Gympie), which was certainly out of our control. We hope to see you back on Fraser Island again in the not-too-distant future.
On first sight the resort is nice enough, however the rooms are tired and the bathrooms kinda old. For what you get, this place is terribly overpriced. We only stayed one night and paid close to $300, without breakfast. I have stayed in some motels which were a LOT nicer and also much cheaper. I'm ok with paying island prices if what you get is worth it, however not at this place. The staff were so unprofessional and not properly trained. We waited 30 minutes to order a drink at the bar, then another 10 minutes for them to make it, then 10 more minutes to pay. Seriously? We won't be back.
Dear Anna-Carina T It's never our intention for guests to leave unhappy and we apologise that we have let you down on this visit. If you'd like to talk through these comments with one of our resort senior managers, please feel free to email us on email@example.com (mention this review title) and let us know your contact details. Thanks also for taking the time to provide feedback.
This was a great place to stay, we had interconnecting hotel style rooms. They were clean and tidy, and positioned with utmost privacy, no one can really see into your room and you look out onto a lagoon. The only reason we chose to visit the island was because it is now part of the Accor group. The discount on the room was great and made it affordable for a family. The discounts off your food were great, however some staff in the hotel had no clue about how the program worked or what the discount should be. Very frustrating dinner on the first night, with not great service in the Maheno buffet restaurant. Once seated and ordered one drink, we didnt see or hear from anyone again. The buffet was ordinary and very basic, only fruit for desert We ate at the Sandbar after that every night and it was great and their staff were also great. Accor advantage plus discount on every meal no problem at all or any hassles.
Hi there It's great to read you enjoyed your stay and we're pleased that our Sand Bar team looked after you whilst you were with us. Thanks for your candid feedback re your visits to The Maheno which we'll be sharing with our new F&B Manager, Warwick Travers, to take up with his team. We hope you'll give us the opportunity to redeem ourselves with future stays.
Greatly disappointed. Staff untrained and unable to give the standard of service one would expect. Hotel needs renovation. Very tired. Rooms poor. Extractor fans do not work, rooms damp and bed linen wet. No competition on the island so the attitude is they don't care as they have a captive audience.
Dear Vicki B Please let me assure you that we do take the customer experience and feedback very seriously and please accept our apologies that your stay hasn't met expectations on so many levels. As you know, we have touched base with you privately to find out more information about your stay with us so we can investigate and fix any issues we find and we look forward to hearing from you at your earliest convenience. We'd also be happy to have one of our Senior Management team contact you direct to talk through your stay if you'd prefer.
We recently had a great 5 nights @ Kingfisher. Had a beautiful room overlooking the bay, enjoyed our "beauty spots" tour (despite bad weather) & loved our bush tucker taste & talk. Great service also.
Dear Carol L Sorry to hear that Mother Nature didn't play ball during your stay - though Central Station and Wanggoolba Creek are pretty fabulous places to be if the weather turned. Thank you also for your kind comments about service and about your stay - we appreciate the feedback.
