"Golf hotel but unable to play golf"
20th April 2012, Muggles23, Glasgow, United Kingdom
The room was very nice, comfy bed, great shower but the tv had only 4 channels. Not a big deal but most hotels offer free view! Great location for what we needed. My husband is a keen golfer but on the Sunday morning, he went to golf course at 7.30am to be told that visitors could not golf until 10am. Check out is 11 so this was not really a possible tee off time. Disappointed to discover staying at a hotel offering golf facilities and unable to play when you want

Management responseDear Muggles 23Many thanks for your review. Thank you for your kind words regarding the bed and shower. With regards to the TV we do have digital channels available. Unfortunately with the digital change over, some TVs have required retuning as of late. Our maintenance team will be checking every TV this week to ensure all available digital channels are tuned in.With regards to golf, on Sunday mornings our members’ competition runs from 7.30am onwards and so non members’ golf isn’t permitted. However we would have simply extended your check out time if your husband wanted to play after the competition. I hope this response has explained the reasoning behind the golf timings and I hope that you will give the hotel another try when you are next in the area.Kind regardsNeel Chawla

"Disappointed"
17th April 2012, Maldon, United Kingdom
A pleasant enough hotel in pleasant surroundings. The room was cold when we checked in. When we complained we were told that the rooms are not heated until 6.00pm, but were offered an electric heater. I don't think it is good policy to let people be uncomfortable and only offer a solution if they complain.Bar/lounge is not very hospitable. Dining room OK. Enjoyed dinner.Breakfast was disappointing. The restaurant wasn't full, but food kept running out and took a long time to replace. My bacon, when it came, was uncooked. Sausages not pleasant. I left half my breakfast because it was unpalatable.Mercure seem to be cutting back and it is reflected in the reduced in-room comforts. My faith in ACCOR's reliability took a bit of a knock with this experience.

Management responseDear GuestThank you for your review and I’m sorry to learn you were not fully satisfied with your stay. We have recently adjusted timers as the weather has improved significantly as of late. I’m sorry that you found the room to be cold on arrival. I will of course follow up with the rest of the Food & Beverage team your breakfast experience. On the other hand I’m glad you enjoyed dinner. We have recently rethought our dinner offering and glad it has made a positive impact. I do hope you consider giving the hotel another try on your next visit to the north east. Many thanksNeel Chawla

"Good value stay in very clean friendly hotel"
10th April 2012, Falkirk, United Kingdom
Excellent distance for travelling into Sunderland the reason for our stay was to attend swiimming competition in Sunderland over 5 days. Lovely clean and friendly hotel with helpful staff, good sized gym and good food in bar/restaurant. Only complaint was a lot of noise on Sat night and that breakfast during week was much better catered for than the very busy Sunday morning.
"First and last time I will be staying here"
30th March 2012, Aberdeen, United Kingdom
This Hotel would be in my top 5 places never to stay in again, there seems to have been a load of money spent on the gym, the spa and the golf course but they completely forgot about the main thing, making guest feels comfortable and relaxed. The rooms were terrible, single beds in a double room, heating was on all night with no way of controlling it so it was like an oven and it was an all round bad experience....Certainly nothing relaxing about a 6 hour drive home after only 3 hours sleep....

Management responseDear guestThank you for your review and I’m sorry to learn your stay was not as comfortable as expected to be. Unfortunately as there is no name left (and a search for Aberdeen is not picking up any names in our system) I cannot comment further on your stay. Perhaps you would be so kind to email me on gm@georgewashington.co.uk with further details. We do pride ourselves on comfortable rooms so your additional feedback would be most welcome. On the other hand I’m glad you appreciate the investments made on the gym, spa & golf course.Kind regardsNeel Chawla

"First Class"
15th March 2012, Wolverhampton, United Kingdom
I would just say from the moment I checked in to the moment I checked out it was just First class. The staff could not be more helpful and the room and restaurant were just superb.Highly recommend the room upgrade it was well worth the money.
"Decent value for money"
12th February 2012, relaxmax92, Puteaux, France
Decent hotel, good size room & bathroom. No ventilation, so obliged to take a shower with bathroom door closed else fire alarm goes off! Good breakfast, albeit expensive (14 GBP). Friendly staff, nice location, no problems faced.
"REMARKABLE"
6th September 2011, Milan, Italy
Nice hotel and quiet position in an area with little tourist attraction. The wi-fi connection was not perfect in all the rooms.Breakfast decent but not excellent: cereals and jams/marmalades were in single portion packages, scrambled eggs were not covered and had a slight crust on top, no warm milk or hot water available unless asked, but personnel not always present.Good restaurant with traditional English cooking. For a continental visitor, the lack of bidet in the bathroom and the separate taps for hot and cold water are perceived as rather uncomfortable. If this is traditional in an average UK home or hotel, maybe a 4-star structure could introduce this change for the benefit of international visitors.
"Could be better...."
4th September 2011, Liverpool, United Kingdom
Not much of a welcome by reception. Room large and light. Bathroom needs updating with newer stuff that fit... taps hard to turn on and off and desperately needs an extractor fan. Room clean enough. Could do with curtain between double and single. Bed large and comfortable. Fridge in room didn't work. Doors could do with something added to stop them banging shut as the first nights sleep was disturbed by wedding party guests returning to their rooms. Breakfast good the first morning - cooked food and cereals, fruit and yoghurt and pastries. Second morning wasn't as good as fewer guests, however, chef came out to inform us he would cook eggs a different way if we liked. This could have been offered on the first morning. The menu stated al sorts of things were available but we saw no evidence of these or were offered any. (eggs benedict, kippers etc) The Washington is an adequate hotel but could be improved to make it excellent.
"One night stop"
15th August 2011, Porirua
we chose this Hotel based on a special price offer and location. The Hotel is largely on one levle but there are several sets of stairs to manage baggage up and down and the distance from the reception to our room was about 70 mtrs. The room was spacious and comfortable. We had a very good and resonably priced meal in the restaurant .
"Take That Break"
7th June 2011
Booked this hotel as a late alternative but it turned out to be a good choice. Lovely staff and a very helpful hotel manager. Bar area fairly small but very comfortable. We had Sunday lunch which was excellent quality and value. Pool and gym complimentary and very enjoyable. Would stay again for a short break.
"Breakfast was a mistake!"
4th June 2011, Sheffield
We stayed for 2 nights on B&B. The additional charge of £14pp for breakfast suggested a high standard of food with good service. We soon discovered that breakfast options were restricted and no service was offered at all. We were also put in a room next to the laundry room - which meant a noisy wake up call by the cleaners at 6:30am! Room was clean, gym was satisfactory and golf course was well maintained. Everything else was of a very poor standard.
"Poor reception staff"
29th April 2011, Calne
Unfriendly staff and told that as they were full we'd have a long wait for dinner. They should be able the cope with the number of guests they intend to cater for. Went to local pub for dinner instead.
"North East Haven"
31st March 2011, amsterdam
A modern comfortable hotel away from the bustle of the city providing excellent value for money with easy access to the A1. Has very good health and fitness facilities and sits on a good golf course. Did not eat at restaurant so unable to comment. Have now stayed on several occasions and plan to do so in the future. Can honestly recommend this Hotel
"Waynet 5"
19th February 2011, Manchester
The hotel its self was very good but the meals advertised were a bit pricy so I actually went out for my evening dinner and had breakfast outside as I thought that at £12.95 it was a bit to much as normally I would stay at premier hotel where it is £7.95 other that this I thought it to a good stay.
"Mercure Newcastle George Washington"
19th February 2011, Leiden
Reasonable hotel, but does not fit yet in the Mercure house style in terms of service and quality of the rooms. The corridor is too loud, which affects sleeping quality. Beds are fine.
"Going to see Peter Kay"
18th February 2011, middlesbrough
Lovely hotel, lovely room, would definitely stay there again & would also recommend it to friends & family. Not to far away from the centre, short ride away in a taxi
