"Escape to / from Dunkirk."
14th April 2012, Dunkirk_DunesTourist, Eastbourne, United Kingdom
I am a keen WW2 fan and wanted to visit the many WW2 relics around the Dunkirk area. I have stayed in all levels of Accor hotels, except Formul1, in many European towns and cities and have always found them to be clean, comfortable, and good value for money - especially when my company has paid for them. :-) The Ibis therefore appeared ideal for my stay in Dunkirk. The check-in was quick and efficient and the allocated room was clean and cigarette smoke free. (This is essential because I am allergic to cigarette smoke.) So far, so good. Ok, off to the nearby bar to have a drink with the locals. :-)Oh dear! Although it is against the law, they allow smoking in there. :-( Never mind, we'll try the local restaurant a short distance in the opposite direction. :-) Oh dear! They allow smoking in there too. :-( And so it appeared with the other restaurants I tried in the area. :-( So, althought the hotel was great, it is unlikely that I will return there because of my troubles with cigarette smoke when trying to find somewhere local to eat and drink in the evening(s). Mind you, I guess Dunkirk will be a great place to go for UK teenagers, etc, who haven't given up smoking yet. For grown ups, especially those with a keen interest in WW2, the sand dunes a few km to the east of Dunkirk are amazing and there are at least a dozen WW2 German bunkers to explore there. And many of them are accessible. In fact they are so good that I may arrange a group trip there with the Sussex Military History Society (SMHS). And I believe the WW2 Museum at Dieppe is also worth a visit - staying at the Etap, Dieppe, of course. (The Ibis, Dieppe, is too far from the town centre.) The Ibis at Lille is also very good. The Ibis Kathedraal, Ghent, is also very good (But was this the one with Euro15 / night parking?) PS: if you don't react to cigarette smoke like I do (i.e. as quick as, and almost as bad as some people have with peanut butter) then the Dunkirk nighlife will probably be ok for you.
"Convenient overnight stop after ferry crossing"
20th February 2012, DoubleEnSuite, Leicester, United Kingdom
Arrived at this Ibis Hotel late at night after our ferry crossing to carry on our drive through Europe the following day. Usual Ibis standards: efficient and friendly staff, clean rooms and good buffet breakfast. Only problem we encountered, being non smokers, there were no "non smoking" rooms available. This Ibis hotel is located in the town centre not far from the Dunlerque ferry terminal, private parking is available (paying extra) but parking overnight in the street looks relatively easy and safe, too.
"Ibis Dunkirk"
6th September 2011, Manchester, United Kingdom
The hotel was tired. The room was very small and not very clean, although the bedding was OK but the the bed was very uncomfortable. The shower was ancient and the sink was so slow to empty. The room was very noisy with water pipes running all night and some sort of a generator going on and off. Didn't get much sleep and had a long drive the following day. Breakfast was meagre and very limited in choice unless you like chocolate cake for breakfast!
"overnight stay on-route to Germany"
16th August 2011, london
Good location. Parking could be an issue though as they only have parking space for 15 cars and on the road outside there are some strict parking regulations. The TV in the room was supposed to have "top" TV channels, unfortunately none of the UK channels worked! Also they stop serving food at 10pm which is a problem if you arrive late from the Ferry.
"Good stopover"
14th August 2011, Sadm705, Matlock, UK
Dunkirk was a good alternative to stopping in Calais for the first night off the evening ferry. Underground carpark was small but, otherwise, the hotel was up to Ibis good economy standard. Very central and easy to find, though Dunkirk was quiet.
"Visit to take part in La Dunkerquoise"
14th August 2011, Southampton
The hotel was very central to where we had to go, so did not have to use the car. The only problem that I had was it was a bit hot at night. Could do with another English speaking TV station. I would say that perhaps the building needs some minor work on it just to keep it looking fresh.
"Excellent staff - rooms need a good overhaul"
31st July 2011, London
Staff were particularly friendly and helpful throughout, both on reception and in the (impressively good) restaurant. The rooms, while functional and what you'd expect from an Ibis, were only superficially clean. There were several badly maintained features (rusting, uncloseable windows, holes in the wall where attached items had been moved) that were attracting dirt.
"Basic 2* but rooms not secure."
25th July 2011, nivagh, Yorkshire, UK
The Ibis Dunkerque Centre is a basic 2* hotel with clean, functional accommodation - small wall mounted desk and chair in the corner of the room, just enough space to walk around the bed, small bathroom with shower over bath arrangement.Rooms in Dunkerque aren't particularly cheap, due, no doubt to the proximity of the ports and ready supply of passing trade that doesn't need to be tempted back. The problem I have with the room I got was the total lack of security - my first room looked out over a flat roof from which the room was directly accessible, and the window had no form of lock whatsoever, and slid fully open. I asked to change rooms and was moved to another, which had the same issue, but looked out over an internal flat roof. Again, no window lock, and there would have been nothing to prevent a break in. Consequently, I had to take my lap top out with me every time I left the room, even for an evening meal.Breakfast was reasonable - a selection of cereals, patisserie, yoghurts, juice and hot drinks, as well as a choice of some cold meats and bread.Overall a reasonable hotel for the price but I can't recommend this hotel on the grounds of the total lack of security in the rooms, sorry.
"Ibis Dunkerque"
9th July 2011, London
The hotel was brilliantly locared for the town centre and the free parking outside a real bonus. The staff were very helpful and the breakfast fine. The biggest downside for us was the lack of airconditioning on a very hot night meant the room (no 216) was stiflingly hot and an external noise (sounded like a fan) was so loud even with the window shut we could only sleep by listening to music on our earphones.Easiest way to find hotel- follw signs to centre ville. The directions to major hotels ( including Ibis) are on brown signs.
"Noisy Guests"
5th July 2011, Southampton
Nothing wrong with the hotel as such. However we had rooms on the first floor facing onto the courtyard at the back of the hotel and were kept awake by noisy french guests until 3am. We were too tired to complain but expected the management to tell the other guests to keep the noise down. Unfortunately they didn't as I suspect they only had someone at reception rather than anyone doing an inspection.. My friends staying in a room also on the first floor overlooking the street had no noise but their room was quite hot. Breakfast was good though!
