"Great place but NO temperature control!"

We have stayed at this particular hotel a number of times because we like it, but this time we had an unfortunate experience. Because of the unseasonably warm weather (during the previous week) the hotel management was caught off-guard and was unwilling/unable to turn on the air conditioner for the entire hotel. for the two days we stayed there it was unbearably hot in our room. 28 degrees celsius = 82.4 degrees f.There was no dispute from management that it was uncomfortably warm throughout the hotel. They apologized over and over again, but would not offer any consideration in return for the uncomfortable room when I asked politely (no discount). We left one day early because of this and I will dispute the charges with Visa and insist on a significant discount.

The hotel offers free Wi Fi. Having stayed in other Mercure Hotels, we assumed that the internet service would be as good as in other hotels in the chain. It isn't. It is truly terrible. the staff were helpful, but basically the connection is rubbish. It is impossible to download pictures, or send files of any size at all. The connection is often dropped altogether. Assuming that many visitors to the hotel are business people, it seems to me a terrible error to offer a service which only reminds me of the early days of dial up. I cannot over-emphasise how dreadful the service is.

The Mercure Astoria is located in a beautiful park adjacent to the central piazza in Reggio Emilia. Our room had a balcony that overlooked a wide walkway, lit with symetrically placed streetlamps. We walked everywhere. The room was spacious and comfortable, and the staff was very obliging. My Italian is limited, but there was always someone at the front desk who spoke English well, so there were no difficulties with communication. It was hard to leave this beautiful city and this welcoming hotel.
