« One of the Best »

I have been to Egypt several times but have never stayed in Aswan. We enjoyed our daily excursions to the various sites, walking along the corniche, and talking with the locals in the markets. We always looked forward to returning to the Old Cateract because it was so relaxing and peaceful. The setting on the bank of the Nile is just spectacular. The staff was top notch, friendly, and took care of us during our stay. We will definitely return again.

« Great Luxury Hotel with Charm & Service ! Agatha Christie is alive ! »

Great place to stay for relax and as a base to travel around Egypt & Aswan area by boat, car or plane to Abu Simbel. The charm of early Art Nouveau last century still operates in the rooms, and main areas in the Palace old building, after great recent restructuration, service at the top and all kind of offers. Hermès amenities in the rooms. Top service & food at the 1902 restaurant in a incredible hollywood style setting ! Unforgettable stay !

« One of the Best »

One of my favourite hotels on the planet. The location of the Old Cataract Hotel is magic, as is the view from the terrace at any time of the day. The hotel is full of old-world charm an character and the service is excellent, as is the food everywhere. Helpful and friendly staff throughout. Get yourself a Nile View room in the main hotel if possible. The annexe is comfortable too and has balconies and excellent views as well, but it's too tall and chunky and a bit of an eye-sore, particularly when viewed from the islands and the water. Additionally, the boat jetty within the hotel grounds and its feluccas are not to be missed. Get a ride in the late afternoon and you will be hooked for ever and want to do nothing else! Forget the motor boats. They are noisy and only to be used if you want to go somewhere in a hurry. Enjoy!

« The stay in cataract »

To whom this may concern, Our stay at the sofitel in aswan was not a good stay. My husband and i travel alot so perhaps we are influenced by the service we usually expect when we stay at the sofitel in other places. 1- When we arrived we asked for a none smoking room to which we didnt even get a reply for. As we were tired we did not make a fuss about getting no reply. 2- At the pool when we asked for a menu in three of the days of our stay they said they had a pool buffet and they wanted to force us to only choose from the buffet and pay 200 a person even if the item we wanted was a la carte, we had to haggle and negotiate eventhough thats not what we went to the sofitel to do, we were there on a vacation not on a negotiation trip. They would then bring the menu with an upset manner and what it seemed to us constantly trying to make us feel guilty for not wanting the buffet. 3- within our room booking we were told we would recieve an afternoon tea for 2. So we decided to take it, so first the person at the restaurant of the hotel asked me to go verify this to the reception when it should have been in the system, anyway i went to the reception who took 45 minutes asking me to send the mail over and over and check it with his boss insisting that it was an offer that we did not take while the email i had sent was a confirmation of the offer that we Took! Anyway we were quite hungry by then and they finally got us afternoon tea for ONE person. Ofcourse when after all this negotiation you recoeve half of the deal, the good moment has defently passed ur already fuming with anger while "enjoying" the afternoon tea, so we ask for the rest of the offer which is the other half and one if the staff haggles with us that is infact for two not one, so i walk up again to the reception and ask to get the definistion of afternoon tea for two which they confirm my expectation of that each person gets a tray. So now we are negotiating again and waiting again for the next half after we have eaten the first half, Then we get the bill asking us to pay for one of the afternoon trays that we receieved, so AGAIN i show them the email that we got it as an offer but by then im already planning not to return there again, the next day they apologize for the bill incident, however upon our check out we find the afternoon tea inserted in our hotel bill 800 egp paying fir both afternoon tea trays. Now had we not looked carefully at each item on that bill, we would have paid it.

« A magical place »

Even though Egypt in the main is a sad place these days this hotel is divine - the views over the Nile magical. Our room superb, food lovely, service excellent - in all the only place to go and hope to go again.

« The good and the bad »

I was excited to return to the Old Cataract Hotel after 17 years. It was just as enchanting as I remembered it to be. We received an upgrade to our already-beautiful room and wished we had been able to stay an extra day or two to enjoy our terrace and its memorable views. The common rooms are even lovelier than they were when we first visited. Sofitel has lavished some care on this property and it shows. The breakfast was excellent, especially the Egyptian food. The dinner we had at the lovely terrace restaurant was good, again with the local foods being best. But now to be fair to those of you contemplating a stay here I have to tell you that we did have some issues. In one of our two rooms the air conditioning didn't work. When we complained, they sent a portable heater. When that didn't solve the lack of air conditioning, they told us that it was actually working and refused to do anything further. For this level of hotel, guests expect working air con and excellent service. Now to the objectionable smell in the room with no air con-this they simply ignored. The best way to describe it is a smell of an overflowing garbage can. Not what Sofitel's guests expect to pay for, is it? The last problem was the attitude of the restaurant staff. The restaurant staff was rather crabby and unwilling to actually give service to guests. One server was annoyed that we wanted a table out of the direct glare of the sun. He insisted we should sit in the sun as it was "good for you." Another server never brought our drinks, so after our third request we asked a fourth time to another server and then when they both brought a pot of tea, our server was angry. You get the general idea. Next trip I'm going to consider other options instead of choosing the Old Cataract without looking at anything else. I'd like to stay again, but I'd like to have a five star experience all-around.

Superbly looked after, everything I wanted from the hotel. Staff were always courteous and obliging wishing to make the stay comfortable and generally happy. Served breakfast was delightful, if a little too French - including cold meats and cheese - not everyone's choice, though alternatives undoubtedly would be provided if requested.

« An amazing get-away »

The Cataract is a beautiful, historic hotel with every modern luxury. I spent a lovely long weekend, and, despite the recent events in Egypt, I felt perfectly safe in Aswan. The service was incredible, the food was delicious, and the views from my room's balcony were breath-taking. The Cataract is a must stay when visiting Egypt.

I stayed here for a few nights in early July and every aspect of my visit was perfect. This is one of the most beautiful hotels I have ever been to and the service could not have been better.
