Novotel Dakar: 4.0 out of 5 stars "Better than sleeping at Senghor Airport!"

27th February 2012, Johannesburg, South Africa

I only a spent a few hours in this hotel (essentially a 6 1/2-hr overnight layover betw flights) and though I obviously didn't see much except for the front desk and the inside of my room, I still felt that it was money well-spent.The front desk clerk, while friendly and courteous, had the presence of mind to cut the customary social interaction, and just get me my room key as quickly as possible. That alone was worth booking this place- I've staid in hotels costing twice as much and ended up having to walk away on "chatty kathy" who just wasn't getting it.My room was clean, functional and what I expected for the rate paid. The non-adjoining and separate toilet closet and 2-pc bathroom seemed a little strange, and the "double" bed was the 'ol European trick of sticking 2 singles together. If that's all I could dig up, I think we're doing well. The free hotel shuttle to/from Senghor Airport (a place about which I could certainly write a whole separate review!) was a Godsend. Be sure to call or e-mail ahead and give them your flight info, in case you come late like I did. The front desk staff all speak ok English despite Senegal being a francophone country.. The airport "agent"- careful he works for several hotels in the area- will be just betond the steel grills that you must pass around after Customs have gotten their jollies X-Ray'ing your luggage for the Nth time. Ignore the money changers waving at you through the steel bars (quite the ambiance I assure you) and report to the "ami" with the clip board. There may be a few awkward moments as you are led to the van in the parking lot, stay alert and do as you're told. The ride to the hotel is about 15 mins. Our driver was somewhat of a leadfoot but at 12 midnight I wasn't arguing. If you are just overnighting as I was, be sure to schedule your ride back to Senghor AS SOON AS you are at the hotel, they have a weird booking system and space is limited. You may not have much choice in what time you get but, if you do, remember the shuttle may well stop at another sister hotel before finally heading to airport. Trust me- leaving 2 hrs before your flight time will NOT be too early.Based on what I saw on Internet travel sites, one could likely pay less and stay closer, but I'm glad that, on this night and in this place, I chose not to gamble.

Novotel Dakar: 5.0 out of 5 stars "Two Weeks in Dakar"

29th June 2011, Columbus

The hotel was excellent. Very friendly and helpful staff. Emjoyed dining at the restaurant. Shuttle to and from the airport a major bonus, especially when dealing with the Dakar airport. I would stay in this hotel during all my future visits to Senegal. Rooms well maintained, pool area relaxing, location perfect, assistance always available. Wonderful stay. Merci bien Novotel Dakar!!!
