Over-priced, small room. Worst coffee in NZ!

It's centrally located, the room was clean. Plenty that's not so good though. It's expensive for what it is, but there isn't a great deal of choice in the city centre and we didn't have a lot of time to spend travelling in and out. Received an email a couple of days before regarding check in arrangements and parking. We were advised to book parking as it's quite limited. Replied to the email confirming we'd like to book it. Heard nothing. Upon arrival, it had been booked, they just hadn't told us. (There are only about 10 spaces so do book ahead as it's cheaper than the alternatives). Only one lift in operation which did lead to long waits. Bathroom was almost as large as the sleeping area of the room! It's quite cramped. Breakfast had its odd moments. It's the usual buffet, the hot food was generally ok. There's a chiller cabinet with bottles of fresh juice and yoghurt - very nice. There are no glasses - they're on the bar behind you and to the right! (Many guests didn't see then and ended up drinking straight from the bottle). Why? Also, there were no teaspoons. Anywhere. It's a pet hate of mine when hotels don't put out extra cutlery at breakfast and feel the need to hide it. Coffee was from a machine - first time we'd seen this in NZ where even the petrol stations make proper coffee - and...it was absolutely awful. It's not impossible to get half-decent coffee from a machine, I suspect that whoever ordered it hasn't had to drink the awful liquid that it produces. On check out I was asked if I'd like the receipt to be emailed to me which I agreed to - six weeks later I'm still waiting. Overall, it's too expensive for what it is, the staff need to up their game, they need to get better lifts and coffee machine. Won't go back and cannot recommend. On a brighter note, and unrelated to the hotel, Mumbaiwala restaurant over the road was fabulous, especially the toilets!

The rooms have everything you need, just that they are a little small. There was barely enough room to walk between the bed and the fridge/kettle station, but hopefully on holidays you won't be spending much time in the room. I found the bed comfortable and the shower had enough hot water. The reception staff were friendly and helpful, and I also tried the restaurant/bar which had a good range of food and drinks. The hotel is located really conveniently, within a block of the old Cathedral, a food court, shopping, bus station etc and an easy walk to the botanic gardens.

We had the fortune to stay at the hotel as part of a 2 week tour of New Zealand. Unfortunately my wife had to undergo emergency surgery within hours of our arrival. The staff from that moment onwards were exemplary in their support for myself and my wife during a difficult time. While my wife was in hospital they went out of their way to provide accommodation and support. The hotel was comfortable to convalesce, clean and located centrally to the city.

Wonderful helpful staff! I really appreciate that they went the extra effort to arrange a taxi, while I was traveling with a tour, to pick up my Kindle that I left at the airport. Otherwise hotel has a great location with good size rooms. Nice buffet breakfast, nice bar area. I would definitely stay again.

Old city central budget hotel

Unfortunately, all hotels and motels were booked due to high tourist season and the O week in town, IBIS was the only option left for us. It was three times of the average price. It’s centrally located, walking distance to shops and restaurants. No parking availability at the hotel. No concierge or any signage about parking indication. The 5 minutes spaces were occupied by taxi and tour shuttles. Because it is on the one-way street system, we had to drive around a couple of time and eventually parked across the street. It’s a very dated property. Upon check in, we have been told the evaluators were broken, had to climb up through fire safety stairs. One elevator was still not in operation when we checked out. The IBIS Plus room we booked at higher floor is small for two people to move around. Cleanliness was an issue too. Service wise, almost felt racist, the only smiley and helpful person was a Pilipino woman. The others did not even acknowledge guests’ arrival. Overall, it’s a budget place suitable for backpackers who don’t expect much but with the central location convenience. Not an hotel nor brand we will return.
