Orléans
Straddling the banks of the mighty River Loire, charming and cultured Orléans was settled in pre-Roman times and was in fact once captured by Julius Caesar. However, it only really sprang to mainstream significance in 1429, when a young peasant girl – now immortalised as Joan of Arc – rescued the city from the hands of English troops during the Hundred Years War.
