Alicante beguiles families, couples, friends and solo travellers keen to mix cultural visits and relaxing by the Mediterranean with lively nightlife. For a truly Spanish experience, visit the historic quarter, contemplate the spectacular panoramas from Santa Bárbara Castle, take dip in the sea and then savour delicious tapas snacks. Read on for our advice on what to do in the city, where to find the best tapas and how to book the best Alicante hotels.
Half the charm of Alicante is wandering the labyrinth of alleys and tiny cobbled squares in the historic "barrio" of Santa Creu sprawling at the foot of Santa Bárbara Castle. Brightly flowering plants and houses swathed in azulejo tiles in Calle San Rafael or Calle San Antonio provide the perfect backdrop for photos. For a glimpse over the city and all its main attractions, climb the little stairway on Calle Pedro Sebastià, turn right into a street full of greenery and head up to the viewing deck at Mirador de Lepanto. And finally, if you're into street art, the facades along Calle Toledo are covered with colourful murals.
An unmissable attraction when you're visiting Alicante, Santa Bárbara Castle perches atop Mount Benacantil some 166 metres above the sea. To the delight of all photographers, this medieval fortress – one of the largest in Spain – offers a wonderful view over the Bay of Alicante. The castle is accessible in a half hour on foot from the city centre, either along Calle Diputado Auset or from Santa Maria Basilica by following a route marked by blue arrows. If the climb is too steep, a lift goes up to the castle from behind Playa del Postiguet beach.
Spain is famous for its many beautiful churches – and Alicante is no exception. Combining Baroque and Rococo elements, Santa Maria Basilica has a truly impressive doorway and an ornate interior. In the historic quarter, San Nicolás Co-Cathedral is topped by soaring domes and spires crowned with blue tiles, and a sumptuously gilded altar dedicated to St Nicholas in the central nave.
To get out among greenery in Alicante, go for a stroll in Ereta Park, which sits on the flanks Mount Benacantil below Santa Bárbara Castle. Take a picnic to eat in the shade of a tree while enjoying lovely views of the city. Located near Alicante's busy port, Moorish-inspired El Palmeral Park is laid out with palm trees, waterfalls, play areas and picnic benches. It's the perfect spot for families wanting to entertain their kids and relax in the shade with vistas of the Med.
When you're staying on the Costa Blanca, you have to try the sea! Alicante has warm, sunny weather all year round, so no matter when you visit, you can kick back on Albuferata and Saladar beaches, or try the water sports at San Juan and Postiguet. Spend the day with your family and enjoy the Mediterranean Sea! If you're travelling as a couple and prefer somewhere quieter, how about a day trip to Tabarca? Take the ferry from Alicante port to discover the delights of this lovely island: fine sandy beaches with crystal-clear water, a picturesque little harbour and a walled town. Sample a delicious plate of caldero – fish soup served with rice – overlooking the sea. The eastern side of the island is a marine reserve where the last monk seals in the Spanish Mediterranean have made their home.
Art lovers can see a significant collection of recent works in the Contemporary Art Museum of Alicante, or Spanish paintings from medieval to modern at the Gravina Museum of Fine Arts. The MARQ Archaeological Museum of Alicante spans regional heritage from prehistory to the industrial age, showcasing Greek, Roman and Etruscan decorative arts excavated locally. A little more unusual, the Museu de les Fogueres is dedicated to Alicante's most famous street party, the Bonfires of St John festival held in June. During the celebrations, gigantic wooden effigies known as ninots are paraded through the streets to be burned. Each year one is saved for display in the museum. Three kilometres from the city centre, the archaeological site at Lucentum reveals remains from Alicante's ancient Roman period – you can get there by tram.
As a coastal city, Alicante is known for its seafood specialities and – of course – its tapas. In the evening, the Explanada de España is the liveliest area to visit. Sip an aperitif in one of its many al fresco cafés and bars, or try the beach tavernas a few minutes away at Postiguet. Still hungry? Try all i pebre, a stew made from fish, chillies, paprika and garlic. Calle San Fransisco also has lots of well-priced tapas bars, and as it's lined with giant mushroom sculptures, it provides a quirky setting for your evening.
To make the most of your stay, opt for an Alicante hotel close to the sea, so you can easily get to the Mediterranean beaches as well as the city-centre attractions. You can also take a room in a hotel in the pretty town of Elche nearby, and organise day trips into the city. Reserve your room now!
Direct flights from most major and regional UK airports arrive at Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport. From there, you can get into the city by taxi, bus or hire car. If you have an early flight, you can stay in a cheap Alicante hotel near the airport. If you're coming from Valencia, or any other Spanish city, you can take the train to Alicante-Terminal railway station. Once you arrive, the city can be easily explored on foot, and you can also use the tram and bus services.
