repeated unprofessional and careless service in this hotel is becoming rather tiresome now, once again for my latest stay the hotel credited a certain number of status-reward points to my ALL account after the stay, then entirely removed them with no explanation or justification given to the guest and credited a lower number of points instead, I suppose the hotel believes that the guest should feel gratified to even be allowed to stay in the hotel, for my latest stay I once again didn't receive the ALL Platinum member benefit (bar of chocolate) and had to ask for this on the second day of my stay, it's the third time I recall this happening recently in this hotel, it doesn't seem to be an aspect that other Accor hotels struggle with in this way, think it would be simpler and more efficient to simply give the member the bar of chocolate when they check in, the first time this happened I gave them the benefit of the doubt that they would eventually give me the bar of chocolate and waited until check-out to mention that I never received it, the reception staff member then looked at me suspiciously as if I was trying to get something I was not entitled to (I am not so desperate for a bar of chocolate.....), on recent stays I also had the unappetising spectacle of flies circling around an exposed tray of cakes on the bar counter (with the bar staff member taking no notice/ seeming to think this was a normal and acceptable level of hygiene) and flies buzzing around reception while I waited to check in, and being charged for breakfast and being looked at suspiciously when I told the reception person I didn't take breakfast (unless other guests are fraudulently giving different room numbers when they go for breakfast so that other unsuspecting guests will be billed for breakfasts they have never taken)

We would like to inform you that the flies you saw at our front desk were caused by a plant that was placed at the reception. We immediately contacted our florist to resolve this problem and replace the withered plant. Moreover, we will ensure that the food at the bar is always adequately covered. In accordance with what we have already discussed via email, sometimes guests are credited with an incorrect number of points by the program ACCOR, which is why the points need to be corrected and re-posted. Although we try our best to avoid causing inconvenience to our guests, sometimes it may take a few days for points to be credited back to their accounts. Staying here on business, and for a 5-star hotel, a bit of a joke. The rooms are a bit dated - the light curtain is torn, the large chair is wobbly and makes a squeaky noise when sat on, cracked ceiling in the bathroom, chipped furniture etc. The bed is the most uncomfortable one I've ever slept in at a hotel. Ripe for throwing out, it is a hard piece of mattress "topped" with some sort of duvet (which does not work as a mattress topper, it is made of feathers for god's sake, you lay on them and it flattens out completely!) One side of the bed is sunk, the other side hard as a rock. The inconvenience: the layout of the room. Large cupboard (plus point for irpning board) with huge doors - when opened, you are practically IN the cupboard, you cannot pass as there is a sideboard directly behind you. The sideboard is located on the corner on the way to the bathroom, so in the middle of the night you are bumping right into it, knocking things over. Toilet is facing a huge mirror! Surely odd, who wants to look at themselves when taking a dump? Soap holder for the little hand soap was taken away at the first cleaning so now has to be placed on the black countertop, leaving stains. The water temperature fluctuates, once you set the temp you cannot adjust it, the handle doesn't work properly. One single coat hanger hook next to the cupboard, halfway to coming off the wall. What if you have more than one person in the room or a bulky coat? Not enough power outlets in room, had to keep unplugging stuff to be able to charge 2 phones, Ipad, laptop. Phone on bedside table keeps blinking with message, when pressing button, something comes up in French which I don't speak, no idea what is being said. No apples or other fruit placed anywhere in hotel, which is pretty standard even for 4-stars, had to request a single apple from the kithcen (breakfast not included and very pricey). I've stayed in many 5-stars but this is way off, even for Brussels standards. The only 5-star about this hotel is the location which is great and surprisingly quiet for such a busy area. Other than that, overall more negatives than positives.

Staff confused about priorities affecting customer service of a great hotel in a good location

Great location and very clean hotel. Hotel seems to have some issues with priorities of staff as on 2 occasions I found myself having an issue with the staff putting their own or hotel priorities ahead of customers. In the restaurant on the night of my arrival I was kicked out the bar for ordering from the restaurant after I was clearly told that I could order from the restaurant at the bar. The bar menu even included a restaurant menu QR code. My complaint seems to have caused a lot of surprise and attempts at understanding the issue. Nevertheless no apology was offered from the staff but only from the manager. The other issue I had was on checking out with a loud lobby full of Police and Canine units because of a VIP forcing me to wait for my car outside. To add aggravation to injury, the bellman was busy organising parking of an awaiting taxi in front of the hotel in the loading/unloading area forcing me to cross the street with my suitcase to reach my own car. I complained that the space in front of the hotel was really meant only for loading and unloading and not for taxi parking which is available nearby.

The hotel is situated in the heart of the European district with walking distance access to the main European institutions - the European Parliament and European Commission. In front of the hotel is Place Jourdan with wonderful small restaurants, a market on Sundays, and the best fritery. Also, there is a park nearby, just across the street with a small lake - an excellent place for walks even on cold January days. the hotel offered a nice breakfast, the room was comfortable.

Sofitel Brussels is a good option near EU, staff are friendly, rooms are fairly spacious and well maintained and breakfast was great. The only negative was the lack of Accor recognition, as Diamond member I did not even receive any welcome amenities. Other Accor hotels in Brussels do a much better job with that. Overall, I would still return next time.
