The history of Liverpool Empire Theatre

First called The Prince of Wales Theatre, the venue was opened in 1866 on Lime Street, one of the city’s primary locations. The theatre of old was smaller than the one we know today and was operated by gas and steam. 

The first production shown at The Prince of Wales was Faust, an Italian opera. Within the first year of its existence, the theatre had its name changed to the Alexandra Theatre and Opera House, most likely after Princess Alexandra, wife to the Prince of Wales. 

In 1895 the venue was bought by Moss Empires, a large theatre company in possession of several Empire theatres across the country. It was then that the theatre became the Liverpool Empire – a name which has stuck for more than 100 years.

During the 1900s, the theatre owners pulled down the structure as it was and rebuilt today’s more elegant venue. The theatre as we know it was opened in 1925. In the years to follow, the Liverpool Empire Theatre hosted the likes of Julie Andrews, Laurel and Hardy, and Frankie Vaughn.

Liverpool’s premier theatre boasts a seating capacity of 2,348. That’s a big audience! It’s hosted two Royal Command performances, and the Royal Variety Show in 2008. Did we mention The Beatles performed there?

Thanks to its location on Liverpool’s Lime Street, the Empire Theatre couldn’t be easier to get to. Next door to Lime Street Station, it’s easy to access by train or bus.
