Visit the Baltic Centre

One of the best free things to do in Newcastle is to visit to its famous BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, which is on the south bank of the River Tyne.
Converted from an old flour mill in 2002, the site is now a must-see contemporary visual art gallery of constantly changing performances and exhibitions. Check out what’s on here ahead of your visit! Once you’ve taken in the artworks, enjoy a stroll by the riverside and across the Millennium Bridge, which is a sight to see in itself.

Visit the Great North Museum: Hancock

Another of our top recommendations is the Great North Museum, which is situated on the Newcastle University campus.
Open daily with free entry, the museum is perfect for budget city break in Newcastle, and offers a fascinating educational experience for all ages. Discover natural history, ancient civilisations, wildlife and habitats collections, a life-size dinosaur skeleton and even Ancient Egyptian mummies! Find out more about its collections here before your visit.

See the Angel of the North

Newcastle’s most unique spectacle and Britain’s largest sculpture, the Angel of the North is a must-see on your budget city break in the city, and what’s more, it’s completely free to visit!
Built in 1998, the Angel is an iconic feature of the city’s skyline and an iconic piece of public artwork to this day. The sculpture towers at 20 metres tall and weighs in at 200 tonnes; with a wingspan bigger than a jumbo jet, it’s unmissable.

Explore Chinatown

Newcastle is home to one of five Chinatowns in England. Chinatown Newcastle is situated in Grainger Town to the west of the city and is well worth a visit on your budget city break.
Enter through the huge Chinese Arch and take a wander down the street for authentic Chinese dishes. You’ll feel a world away from the centre of the bustling northern city!
