Nottingham Castle

Planning a trip to Nottingham? We have a choice of excellent hotels near Nottingham Castle. Here, we bring you the lowdown on the landmark, its Museum and Art Gallery, and other places to explore in Nottingham too!

Nottingham Castle is perhaps best known for its role in the legend of Robin Hood, providing a stronghold for Prince John and the legendary archer’s enemies. Whether the legends are true or not, we don’t know, but one thing we know for sure is of the castle’s place in history as a major fortress in medieval times and its significance in the English Civil War.

Though bloody sieges, wars, demolitions and rebuilds, the castle has changed over time, though much of it remains original – the castle today tells a fascinating story of the past. We recommend venturing down into passageways and tunnels on an award-winning cave tour to get the full experience!

The Castle Museum and Art Gallery

The Castle Museum and Art Gallery
As well as a fascinating historical visit, Nottingham Castle is home to a Museum and Art Gallery, where you can find a varied collection of both Fine and Decorative art, as well as stunning paintings and classical sculptures.

There’s even a ceramics gallery, which features unmissable 20th-century Ballentyne ceramics. Don’t miss the stunning collection of artwork on display at the castle either, which boasts an impressive array of watercolours, prints and contemporary pieces.
