A brief history of Nottingham Castle

Nottingham Castle is perhaps best known for its role in the legend of Robin Hood, providing a stronghold for Prince John and the legendary archer’s enemies. Whether the tales are true or not, we don’t know. Still, one thing we know for sure is of the castle’s place in history as a central fortress in medieval times and its significance in the English Civil War.
Though bloody sieges, wars, demolitions and rebuilds, the castle has changed over time. However, much of it remains original – the landmark today tells a fascinating story of the past. We recommend venturing down into passageways and tunnels on an award-winning cave tour to get the full experience!

Nottingham Castle Museum and Art Gallery

As well as a fascinating history, Nottingham Castle is home to a museum and gallery. Visitors can enjoy a collection of fine and decorative art, paintings, and classical sculptures.
With everything from costumes and textiles displays to beautiful jewellery, glass, and silverware, you can find a mix of incredible collections here. There’s even a ceramics gallery, which features unmissable 20th-century Ballantyne ceramics.
Don’t miss the stunning collection of art on display at the castle either, which boasts an impressive array of watercolours, prints, and contemporary pieces.

The city boasts two big shopping centres, independent boutiques, and lots of trendy bars, pubs and restaurants, so there’s plenty to explore! Once you’ve visited the castle, there are lots of other historical buildings around which make great days out for the whole family to enjoy.
