Vienna’s ImPulsTanz International Dance Festival was founded by the cultural impresario Karl Regensburger and the Brazilian choreographer, Ismael Ivo, in 1984 and now constitutes one of the highlights of the Viennese summer season. Since its creation, the event has developed into one of the leading contemporary dance festivals on the international scene attracting dancers, choreographers and artists from all over the world. The festival’s success depends in no small part on its 4-pronged approach to programming encompassing performances, workshops, research projects and, of course, partying!
The annual 5-week programme features more than 100 performances presented to some 30,000 spectators, staged in Vienna’s most prestigious venues – of which there are no shortage in this traditional cultural hub – such as the Vienna State Opera, the Burgtheater, the Volkstheater or the MuseumsQuartier. The festival showcases the cream of the contemporary dance establishment inviting artists and companies such as the Ballet de l'Opéra National de Paris, Jérôme Bel, Compagnie Marie Chouinard, Damaged Goods, La La La Human Steps, Cie. Mathilde Monnier, Rosas, Ultima Vez and so on. But space is also accorded to the cutting-edge young companies in the Young Choreographers' Series.
At ImPulsTanz, there is a tradition of encouraging everyone with an interest in dance to participate. More than 120 internationally renowned teachers and choreographers come to conduct 200 workshops open to beginner, intermediate and professional dancers. ImPulsTanz is famous for the diversity of its programming with workshops covering contemporary dance, Butoh, Yoga, dance for people with disabilities and more.
In addition, the Research Project strand of the programme provides professionals with a valuable opportunity to work out the kinks in their productions with project heads, the emphasis resolutely on intense interaction. To date, renowned artists including Merce Cunningham (New York), Emio Greco | PC (Amsterdam), Wendy Houstoun (London) and Akram Khan (London) among others, have placed their experience at the service of participating projects.
Finally, ImPulsTanz has created the perfect setting in the festival lounge for artists, dancers, choreographers and spectators to unwind. DJs supply eclectic sets until the early hours and live gigs are programmed throughout the festival period. Not to mention the two festival parties which open and close this contemporary dance extravaganza with great fanfare.
