The Namdaemun Gate is the most important national treasure of South Korea. It was originally called Sungnyemun and at 18 kms long and 6 metres in height was one of the three main gates of Seoul's wall. The construction of the gate made of wood and stone was completed in 1398, but it was renovated on numerous occasions over the centuries.
The gate is located near to the Namdaemun Market, the oldest market in Seoul dating back to 1414!
