This cultural institution was named after a Japanese painter from Kyoto who emigrated to Brazil in 1934; she was barely 21 years of age.

Tomie Ohtake began her artistic career much later, however, at age 40, and quickly became a leading figure of the informal abstract art movement. Her son, Ruy Ohtake, went on to become a major architect. Her lifework (paintings, engravings and sculptures) is her legacy, her gift to the world, and will ensure she is not forgotten…
