Travel guide - Salzburg

The birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Salzburg is a city in Austria which is profoundly engraved with the marks of the classical tradition, which is expressed in its numerous music festivals. Nestling in the heart of the mountains, beside the river Salzach, the city presents a Baroque ensemble which will plunge the visitor into the past.

The Old Town of Salzburg was added to the Unesco World Heritage list in 1997 and its charming architecture – ranging from Gothic to Baroque in style - offers a beautiful setting for romantic walks or solitary wanderings.
The Hohensalzburg Fortress and the cathedral of Salzburg are true architectural gems which make up part of the city's identity.

Visiting Salzburg will immerse you in a whirlpool of classical music. Mozart Week, the Salzburg Biennial, and the Pentecote and Easter music festivals founded by Herbert von Karajan, punctuate the year with classical music concerts. But the city's cultural highlight remains the Salzburg Festival which takes place in summer and has helped make Salzburg's name internationally.
