Every 4 December, Saint Barbara or Barborky is celebrated with a popular custom which kicks off the Christmas festivities in the Czech Republic.
According to tradition, a branch is cut from a cherry tree, put in a vase and left to flower in the home of a young, single woman. If it flowers on Christmas Eve, the woman will marry the following year. It is also a symbol of plenty.
