The Paris Marathon was held for the first time back in 1896, with just 191 participants starting from the Porte Maillot for the 40km "Tour de Paris Marathon". The marathon returned to the French capital in its modern form in 1976. Nowadays the Paris Marathon is a huge scale event which takes over the city, seeing some 50,000 runners taking part.
This major endurance test is open to professionals and amateurs alike. An urban marathon course, the Paris Marathon winds its way through the beautiful streets and parks of the French capital.
Nowadays, the course measures the regulation 42.195 kilometres long. Starting on the Champs-Elysées and finishing on Avenue Foch, it takes runners past the Louvre Museum, through the Place de la Bastille, alongside the Seine and through the beautiful woods in the Bois de Vincennes and Bois de Boulogne, covering both East and West extremities of the city.
Considered one of the world's greatest marathons, the event is eagerly awaited by marathon runners - first timers and seasoned runners alike - not to mention many thousands of spectators along the route cheering the runners on. Come and soak up the atmosphere and lend your support!
