Created in 1911 for the sole purpose of attracting the jet set who preferred Nice at the time, the Monte-Carlo Motor Rally (Rallye Automobile Monte-Carlo) has become one of the most popular rallies in the championship over the years. While the early days were a bit sluggish, the rally really came into its own in the 50s.
In the mid-90s, the International Automobile Federation (FIA) decided to completely overhaul the rules of the rally. This allowed organisers to take advantage of less restrictive rules than the IRC Championship, applicable to the Monte Carlo Rally too. The French do well in Monaco with Sebastien Loeb winning the Rally five times, Sébastien Ogier winning twice and Bryan Bouffier winning it in 2011. Tommi Makinen won the title four consecutive years running from 1999 to 2002.
