In 1967, during the development works of the Quartier de la Bourse, the excavations uncovered the Old Port of Marseille: the Jardin des Vestiges (the Garden of Vestiges), the cemetery, antique Greek walls, the quay, a freshwater pool and a paved road from Roman times. But the museum, which proposed an educational look at the history of the city, was too small to show the extent of its cultural wealth to advantage.
After several years of work, extensively refurbished and expanded (6500 m2), the new Musée d'Histoire de Marseille (Marseille History Museum) opens its doors in September 2013, tying in with Marseille-Provence 2013, when Marseille is European Capital of Culture. The museum presents its maritime history and the port of Marseille in 13 sequences from 600 BC to the present today. The archaeological site adjacent to the museum is a roofless room open to the skies, with spaces on the site deploying a collection of some 4,000 objects and documents. Numerous multimedia tools and 3D animations provide different perspectives.
