The La Major Cathedral or Sainte-Marie-Majeure Basilica in Marseille was built by Léon Vaudroyer between 1852 and 1893 in a unique Romanesque-Byzantine style. Its striking black and white striped stonework, its many small domes and the beautifully decorated interior are reminiscent of Eastern churches.
La Major was the largest cathedral to be built since the Middle Ages.
It was built on the site of a Gaulish Baptistry, next to the old Major cathedral, which lost two bays in the mid 19th century.
