The "Real Madrid Botanico", the city's lush Botanical Gardens, are home to over 5,000 plant species. This garden was the brain-child of Ferdinand VI in 1755, but it was in 1781, under Charles III, that the garden was to take root on the Paseo del Prado.
The Botanical Gardens celebrated their 250th Anniversary in 2005 and a new terrace was built for the occasion by architect Pablo Carvajal and landscape-architect Fernando Caruncho. This area is known as the "laurel terrace", and has a fine view over the surrounding area.
