Madrid's Plaza Mayor is so stunningly unique, it's at the top of almost every list of things to see in Spain’s gorgeous capital. At the heart of the city's historic quarter, Madrid's main square was built in 1690. You can reach it from 6 different entrance passageways, each crowned with a splendid arch. With its neatly uniform facades and column-lined arcades, it typifies "Austrian Madrid" architecture.
It's theatrical in the true sense of the term, as this plaza was historically used as a backdrop for bull running, and although such events no longer happen in Madrid, the square is often used as a venue for many a popular gathering today.
