All year long

Contemporary arts centre.

Formerly a hospital, this building, which was classified ‘Artistic Historical Monument’ in 1977, underwent heavy renovations beginning in 1980. In 1986, it became the Reina Sofia Arts Centre, then in 1988, the Spanish Museum of Contemporary Art.

In 1992, King Juan Carlos and Queen Sophie of Greece inaugurated the
Reina Sofia National Museum’s permanent collection
, which until then only hosted temporary exhibits.

Since then, the museum has represented the arts from 1900 to the present day in its permanent collection, as well as through its temporary exhibits. In 2005, the addition designed by Jean Nouvel gave the museum a large auditorium with daring programming, a library specialising in the contemporary arts and a very stylish bar. Among the several masterpieces by Salvador Dalí, Joan Miró or Juan Gris, the museum houses Guernica, Picasso’s monumental canvas.
