In 1528, the empress Isabelle of Portugal, wife of Carlos I, had a retreat centre built in the honor of San Isidro Labrador, become patron saint of the city, who had lived there during the XIIth century and had created a miraculous spring by tapping on a rock. This water brought about the recovery of the queen’s son, the future king Phillip II.
The simple church, which remains standing to this day, was rebuilt in 1725 upon the ruins of the primitive building.
