All year long
The Plaza de la Independencia ("Independence Square") is an expansive area at the entrance of the Retiro park, a real breath of fresh air in the Spanish capital. The "Puerta de Alcala", an emblematic monument, stands proudly in the centre of the square. Designed by architect Sabatini, the construction was commissioned by king Carlos III. The structure is named after its emplacement on the road that leads to the city of Alcala de Henares.
