Sunday, March 3 2019

It's good to laugh.

Originally, the carnival was an irreverent festival which caricatured and mocked powerful people. Anything frightening was exorcised by derision. The Murgas and Chirigotas are a direct descendent of this tradition, musical and burlesque performances where groups of artists sing parodies. Nothing is spared: the government, the news, politics. Like a scathing press review, this unusual event has become an unmissable fixture in the Madrid carnival.
