Every country, and almost every town, has their own little strange traditions, which are incomprehensible to outsiders. In Spain, the Manteo del Pelele is a very serious contender for the title of the country's wackiest custom. Organised as part of the carnival season, it involves meeting up and holding a large blanket (el manteo) and using it to toss a large stuffed dummy (el Pelele, which some assume to be a nickname for Pedro). It all takes place to the sound of music played by local bands.
A fun family event, this tradition was celebrated by the greatest Spanish painter, Francisco de Goya, who painted a picture of it in 1792.
