Outrageously delicate.

A lonely artist who quickly took an interest in the physical and psychological torments of adolescence, Balthasar Klossowski de Rola or Balthus strove to represent female subjects in puberty, an avant-garde choice that earned him as much praise as scorn. Almost unwillingly scandalous, the painter won admiration with his unique technique, his delicate patterns reminiscent of the covers of children's books, and his figures and situations that flirted with surrealism. Having been shunned for many years by the great museums, over the last few years he has attracted the attention of curators exploring his very personal and unique works.
