Traboules of Old Lyon - Sightseeing Lyon - Javier García Blanco

The secret passages of Lyon.

A Traboule, what is that? A Latin word meaning a passageway which passes through a group of buildings. This type of architecture is unique to the city of Lyon.
Renaissance buildings were constructed on the plots which dated from the Middle Ages, characterised by their "piano key-like" shape: the long narrow pieces of land ran between two parallel streets.

To gain maximum space, there were hardly any side streets. The traboules therefore allowed people to pass from one street to another without having to do a detour. Some of them have fantastic architecture with Renaissance ceilings, staircases and openings allowing you to catch a glimpse of hidden inner courtyards.
A real Lyon labyrinth to discover.
