A busy stop-over, and emblematic of life in the city of Lyon, Place Bellecour or Place Louis-le-Grand is the largest pedestrianised square in Europe. Situated in the 2nd arrondissement of the city, it is the venue for the tourist office in particular, and the meeting point of the main pedestrian streets in Lyon: rue de la République and rue Victor Hugo. With an equestrian statue of Louis XIV created by François-Frédéric Lemot at its centre, it is a major meeting place for all the people of Lyon. Place Bellecour also plays host every year to numerous demonstrations, open-air concerts in summer and even an outdoor ice rink in winter, with roller-skating every Friday evening.
