In 1997 in the Ninkasi opened in Gerland, in the 7th arrondissement of Lyon. It was at once a pub, restaurant and beer factory! It became well known for its musical programme, and a few years later, in 2000, the place expanded with an additional space dedicated to live music.
Thus, alongside the Ninkasi Kafe, the Ninkasi Kao offers a concert hall, an alternative to both pubs and café-concert programming, the place thus offering both large and small capacity venues.
With the ability to accommodate nearly 600 people, Ninkasi Kao soon became a famous venue. In all, five sites are run by Ninkasi: Opéra, Ferrandière, Ampère and Gratte Ciel.
The story behind the name is that Ninkasi is the Sumerian goddess of beer, so it follows that we find a special craft beer served in Ninkasi venues.
