In honour of the bard…

When American actor Sam Wanamaker saw the original Globe theatre on London's Bankside in 1949, he decided that the edifice was not worthy of such a grand playwright as William Shakespeare - indeed what once been a magnificent Elizabethan theatre had become a run-down ruin after the fire of 1613. In 1970 he founded the "Shakespeare Globe Trust", dedicated to the understanding of Shakespeare's literary landscape and the interpretation of his works on stage.

The reconstruction of the Globe Theatre lasted from 1993 to 1997. The new edifice is a perfect replica of the original Elizabethan theatre, a magnificent edifice dating back to 1599.
