The Portobello Road Market, located in Notting Hill, west London, has gained an international reputation over the years. During the 19th century, it was primarily dedicated to the dissemination of great things, namely fruit and veg, but by the 60s it had become a hunting ground for antiques and other vintage items.
The wares are unpacked on Saturday morning, the liveliest day - to get the best deals, better to wake up early, it starts around 5:30am. Shoppers can go bargain-hunting surrounded on all sides by beautiful Victorian architecture. The real beauty of this marketplace, however, is the jumbled ambiance, mixing cultures, savours and colours and offering a very modern, cosmopolitan charm.
