Events and festivals

From Saturday, August 4 2018 to Tuesday, March 31 2020

A stunning collection of fashion items, costumes and accessories.

Dressed to impress: Fashion in the 18th century will showcase 13 male and female costumes. The exhibition highlights changing attitudes towards body shapes and documents the social climate of the time. The clothes on display are typical of the main fashionable styles worn by the middle classes, then known as the "middling sort". Neither rich nor poor, these people wanted to improve their social standing.
The exhibition will include a rare pair of men's stockings with padding designed to accentuate the calves, at a time when it was considered important for men to have shapely calves. There will also be two videos in the gallery, describing how the men and women of the 18th century were dressed by their servants.
