The oldest, but also one of the most typical districts of Lisbon, Alfama includes many old freguesias and one section of two well known streets: Rua do Barão and la Rua São João da Praça.
This district is known the world over for its fado bars. It is teeming with historic monuments and houses and lots of restaurants. Alfama is a bit like an old village where everyone knows each other. The Festival of Saint Anthony of Padua is celebrated there every year in mid June.
