Every spring, the whole of Hong Kong gets into a festive mood for the Tin Hau Festival, one of the city’s biggest and most colourful celebrations.
Legend has it that over 1,000 years ago, Tin Hau stood on the shore guiding fishing boats home through typhoons and storms. She’s now known as the Goddess of the Sea, and protector of fishermen and sailors. To mark her birthday, boats covered in colourful streamers and flags take tributes to one of the most prestigious temples built in her honour in Joss House Bay. Prayers are said for safety, security, fine weather and full nets during the coming year.
The festival culminates in a procession with floral paper offerings, music, singing and dancing.
