Set up at a time when the Hong Kong film industry was not as well-recognized internationally as it is today, the Hong Kong International Film Festival is still renowned for scouting new local talent.
The local film industry is considered to be one of the most productive and innovative in the world, having produced some of the greatest filmmakers (Tsui Hark, Wong Jing John Woo, Wong Kar-Wai, Johnnie To) and actors (Chow Yun-Fat, Tony Leung, Andy Lau) in recent years.
Two film genres have also emerged through this creative effervescence: wu xia pian (Chinese martial arts) and triad films.
