A jewel in Grenoble.

The jewel of the place de Verdun, Grenoble's prefecture (an official or police building) occupies the entire south side of the square facing the old city.
It was built by the architect Charles Questel in 1866/1867 and boasts a majestic facade of limestone from the southern Drome area, mimicking the architecture of a seventeenth century mansion.

Between the windows on the first floor are numerous busts of famous personages and important historical figures from Grenoble or Dauphiné such as Bayard, Lesdiguières, Condillac, Barnave, Mounier, Vaucanson
