The calle Lanín (Lanin Street) is in the Barracas district, where the painter Marino Santa María was born in 1949. In the 1990's he decided to paint the facade of his workshop at 33 Lanin Street in the style of one of his paintings.
The neighbours liked the vibrant colours so much that they asked the painter to paint their houses too. The artist successfully lobbied for funding from Unesco, the National Museum of Fine Art and the Buenos Aires government and obtained the funds to paint the four blocks that make up Lanin Street. It took two years to complete this open air work of art, which has since been covered with synthetic enamel.
