You are instantly greeted by a bouquet of aromatic scents at the entrance to the former grocery, now a café, el Gato Negro. Arranged in oaken display cases, the spices are presented in the same manner as in the original shop. This café, which reminds one of an old style apothecary (the spices used to be stored in small labelled glass bottles) is listed as a historical heritage site.
You can still buy freshly ground coffee, cardamom, teas, ginger, jalapenos and much more. The Gato Negro café/restaurant is also a favourite haunt of the Buenos Aires artists and intellectuals.
