In 1971 the architect Etienne Stautemans was to make the very first tapis de fleurs, or carpet of flowers, which now appears every two years in the centre of Brussels: a 77 metre long, 24 metre wide, brightly coloured work of art made up of 700,000 begonias spread across the Grand Place.
Variations in theme ensure that each year, this flower carpet is a truly unique and breathtaking spectacle.
