Brussels Airport was built at the initiative of the Germans during the Second World War. Located by the town of Zaventem, 12 kilometres northeast of the Belgian capital, Brussels Airport is the largest airport in Belgium and the fourteenth largest in Europe, with nearly 17 million passengers annually.
It serves mainly European destinations (about three quarters of flights are within Europe), and destinations around the world (Africa, Asia, America and Middle East).
