Travel guide - Bruges

A city in the Flemish region of Belgium, Bruges is criss-crossed by numerous canals which has given it the nickname of the Venice of the North. The medieval architecture of its historic centre make Bruges a charming, romantic, Flemish style city.
The narrow streets and stone bridges which cross the canals make this a picturesque setting for walks. Discover Bruges by whichever mode of transport you prefer, be it on foot, by bicycle, by boat or by horse-drawn carriage…

After having visited the church of Notre-Dame in Bruges, take a moment to admire the Grand-Place, perhaps while enjoying a waffle, before climbing the Belfry tower where you will be rewarded with a panoramic view of Bruges.

All year round, the cobbled streets, red brick houses and quays of Bruges are abuzz with the sound of music festivals. For a truly romantic trip, the MA Festival offers a programme of classical music concerts. Fans of jazz should visit Bruges in autumn in order to enjoy the concerts at the Bruges Jazz Festival and if you are after some serious partying opt to visit Bruges in summer when you the lively Cactus Festival takes place.

A family visit to Bruges will naturally include children's favourites such as the Chocolate Museum and the Ice Sculpture Festival. For a more unusual event, head for the International Doll and Teddy Bear Exchange which will capture the hearts of young and old alike.

On the sport side, Bruges is the starting point for the Tour of Flanders, a cycling race which is reputed for its demanding course.
While the cyclists toil away, the tourists can enjoy some Belgian culinary specialities. The traditional moules-frites await you at almost every restaurant, and you can taste a variety of Belgian beers at the Beer Festival, but the most important gastronomic speciality of Bruges is, of course, chocolate!

With walks, visits and tasting sessions, Bruges has some wonderful moments in store for you!
