Events and festivals

From Sunday, July 22 2018 to Friday, February 1 2019

Tell me what you look like, I'll tell you who you are.

At a time when image editing software and social media are transforming our relationship with appearance, Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery has chosen to look more closely at the body and its representation. Touching on issues including religion, sexuality, and social status, our bodies are now on display like a business card, a proclamation of health and of belonging to a group, an inexhaustible source of pressures and complexes.
How has our relationship to the body evolved with different times and cultures? How has art seized upon this moving representation? This free exhibition tries to answer these questions in a modern and enjoyable way.
