The veritable heart of German democracy, the Bundestag met for the first time in its history in Bonn on 7 September 1949. At that time, it succeeded the Reichstag following a Basic Law adopted that same year. Since 1999, the historical Reichstag Palace in Berlin, renovated by Norman Foster, who added the striking glass dome, once again houses the German Parliament. The building is particularly symbolisc as it was ravaged by the famous fire of 27 February 1933. It once carried a red flag signifying the taking of Berlin by the Russians on 30 April 1945.
